Alex Schwerdt was recently named one of Utah Construction and Design magazine’s “dandy dozen” up-and-coming construction professionals.

Schwerdt, who’s been a project manager at Big-D Construction for 11 years, primarily works on higher education and public projects, including recent buildings for Weber State University, the University of Utah, and the state of Utah.

“I love buildings,” Schwerdt said. “Once I took a framing class I knew that was exactly what I wanted to do.”

She manages the budgets and schedules for her projects, which is “a lot of numbers,” she said. “Day to day I’m the support for the architect and the owner, [while] the subcontractor is doing the work.”

Schwerdt recently completed the Utah’s unified state lab, where the medical examiner’s lab, crime lab, and department of agriculture lab for meats and dairy shared similar space needs. She also worked on a renovation for Weber State’s social sciences building, and the University of Utah’s S.J. Quinney College of Law.

A woman in her industry is still an unusual sight, Schwerdt said, and she credits that gender imbalance with giving her a strong work ethic.

“I need to know everything, all the ins and outs, to be able to respond to people and let them know that I know what I’m talking about,” Schwerdt said. “I think that being a woman in this field has pushed me to become better.”
